In January 2023, Starting Point officially launched its Family and Community Engagement (FACE) department, a transformative step toward better serving families. Spearheaded by Shannon Viccarone, FACE was built upon Starting Point’s core services—resource and referral, scholarships, and the Community Data Bank—while adding a cohesive outreach and marketing strategy. The department also integrated the Foster Hub, further strengthening support for foster families.
For years, Starting Point’s services had existed in highly specialized teams that served different groups of people. With new organizational leadership in place, it was clear that the community’s needs were shifting, calling for a unified approach that fostered collaboration between services. That effort grew, and by 2023, FACE was fully established, integrating outreach, communications, financial assistance, advocacy, and foster care support under one umbrella.
This restructuring was a catalyst for continued growth. Following the launch of the FACE Team, Starting Point expanded its efforts, leading to the formation of the Marketing and Communications department to enhance brand awareness and outreach. This evolution has strengthened the organization’s visibility, ensuring that families can easily access the support they need.
FACE’s impact is evident in the community. Families now recognize Starting Point as a trusted resource, whether through social media, in-person events, or just the signage on their building. The department’s work has also paved the way for new initiatives like the Parent Youth Ambassador (PYA) program and expanded scholarship funding, benefiting hundreds of children.
Beyond external engagement, FACE has helped change Starting Point’s internal culture. Fostering collaboration across departments has ensured that every staff member—regardless of role—can effectively advocate for the organization’s mission.
What started as a vision to innovate across services at the organization has now evolved into a dynamic department that strengthens Starting Point’s role in the community. And as Shannon puts it, “We’re just getting started.”
